I remember when ...

We made our own paste eggs every Easter as kids. We would go to the local allotment and buy fresh eggs from and old guy we called chicken Joe because of all the birds he had. The dyes were all natural collected from the local woods. We would set up a fire and boil the eggs with the dyes in a pan we'd 'found'. It wouldn't be much good when we finished with it, but the adults accepted it as part of Easter. When the eggs were boiled/dyed we would smear a little wax polish on the shell and wrap them in leaves and grasses then bung 'em back in the pot with a contrasting dye. The patterns we would get were amazing. I can't remember which plants gave you which colours but they really were very vibrant. And strange though it sounds I don't ever remember being taught the art of paste egg making , it was just summat kids did at Easter. We would then polish them up with a block of bee's wax kindly donated by a Mrs Person who owned the local chemist. Faberge eat yer heart out LOL. Easter Monday was the day you showed off your eggs and valuable prizes could be won like A bar of Fry's five Boys chocolate or a bag of sherbet saucers. the whole community would join in ... I remember the local park being packed with folk just enjoying showing off their eggs and hoping for a prize. One thing I do remember .... the eggs should have come with a health warning ... I did try to eat one one Easter and it was deep purple and stunk like an open midden LOL. Must have been the three hours boiling it had had.

I can remember a mates wife said that she was going to boil some eggs for to take to club and said how long does it take to hard boil a egg she was told about 4 to 5 mins.
He said she burnt a big hole in pan because she put 10 eggs in and left them for 40 mins which is 4 mins a egg.
I dont know if you remember titchy lonsdale but he was in the club one night and the add for pg tips came on bobby davison said it was cleaver how they got the monkeys to do what they did and must of took them ages to train them titchy said hi and it must take them months to teach them to talk,he got a load of beer mats thrown at him.We had loads of wierd friends like and some of the things they did was unbelievable.
